Digital Atmospheres

Most apps are designed only for screens. Designers focus on visuals.

But when people talk about apps in real life, they do not talk about interface patterns.

They talk about emotions. They say:

“This app stresses me out.”

“This one feels comforting.”

“This one makes me anxious.”

So I asked myself:
What if we could experience those feelings physically instead of visually?

To better understand how people feel when using different apps, I conducted a series of short interviews.

Based on the interview, I developed Take-Away Scent Cards for LinkedIn, Bumble, DoorDash, and Instagram.

Each app has a scent profile diagram printed on tracing paper. The scent is applied directly to this tracing layer.
The color distribution represents different scent components. The intensity and spread suggest how strong each note is.

Behind that tracing layer is a solid black base card.
It contains narrative text and emotional keywords.
